  • Home Gym: Wheelchair Lift Installation
  • From "Home Transformations"
    episode DHTR-210

To prepare the door for the chairlift installation, a platform is created to allow Brian to roll out the wheelchair. The platform is reinforced with plywood, and then a small side step is created using the same steps as the platform. Next, the chairlift is secured to the ground.

    Wheelchair Lift Installation

    1. Before the lift installation, a step was made by installing two ledger boards and another at the same height on the new wall (figure A). These ledger strips will provide the support for the new platform.

    2. Cut the wood for the platform with a compound miter saw. Remember to start the saw blade before making the cut on the wood, and always cut all the way through the wood before lifting the saw blade.

    3. With the powder-actuated nailer gun, secure the base of the platform to the floor (figure B).

    4. Next, anchor the supports to the frame of the platform.

    5. Install trimmers and top board (figure C).

    6. Complete the landing by securing two glued pieces of plywood to the top with screws.

    7. Build a small step off the landing using the same method. First build the framing, attach to the platform, and then cover with the top plywood for the top (figure D).

    8. Finally, roll the lift over to the platform (figure E). To install the lift, use a rotary hammer drill to make the holes to fasten the lift to the concrete (figure F).

    9. Vacuum the dust and then insert wedge bolts by tapping them in place with a hammer. The collar of the bolt expands so that the bolt will not slip out.

    10. Test the lift and it is all ready to go. Houston...we have a lift off (figure G)!
