Materials: insulation stapler staples 2x4s hammer nails pry bar measuring tape hand saw plastic seal Insulating Walls 1. Insulation is typically made of spun fiberglass (figure A). 2. Push fiberglass insulation between the studs with the paper side out (figure B). 3. Staple paper flaps, which are on either edge of the insulation, to the stud posts with a staple gun (figure C). 4. Use an insulation that is appropriate for the project. The higher the number, the better it works. R-13 was used in this project (figure D). 5. Place 2x4s over the top of insulation, spanning the studs (figure E). Nail into place. 6. Nail the covering sheets of the plywood to these (figure F). 7. The 2x4s are needed to bump out the flywheel so it will be even with the concrete footer. 8. Secure the plywood with the A-grade side facing out. Space screws every 12 inches (figure G).
9. Around the doors and windows, cut the plywood to fit (figure H).10. Drywall could have been used to perform the same function, but plywood was used for its light weight and durability. Also, cabinets will be covering the wall later, so there is no need to tape and mud, which is commonly the procedure when working with drywall.
Garage Door Insulation1. To insulate the garage door, start by removing the existing weather stripping (figure I). 2. Next, measure the difference between the door and the concrete (figure J). 3. Using a circular saw, cut a strip to fill the uneven gap between the floor and garage door.
4. Secure the strips with glue and screws (figure K).5. Once the door is level, install a new plastic weather strip with nails (figure L). Cut the remainder with a utility knife. 6. For added insulation, install a flexible weather seal around the exterior of the garage door.
