Wallpaper Techniques
1. Apply sizing (glue) to the wall surfaces (figure A). Sizing helps adhere the paper to the wall and also allows for adjustments (side to side).
2. First, have razors on hand (figure B), and be sure to establish straight plumb lines.
3. Start in the corner and use a level to mark a straight line and align the first strip of wallpaper.
4. Next, cut the second strip of wallpaper long enough to overlap both the ceiling and the floor (figure C).
5. Soak the pieces in warm water (figure D). Roll out flat, fold and let it set for 10 minutes to activate the glue side.
6. Apply the wallpaper to the corner and use a smoothing brush to level out the surface.
7. Using a razor, cut the hole for the electrical outlet, and trim the top and bottom (figure E). It is helpful to use a broad knife to help hold the paper while the razor knife cuts.
8. Position the second sheet in the same manner. Once smooth, use a seam roller to smooth out the seams.
9. Carefully work your way around the room. Once near the corner, wrap the wallpaper onto the next wall about 1/2 inch. Then, establish a new plumb line and attach the next sheet of wallpaper aligned to the straight edge.
10. Continue down the wall until you get to the doorframe. To fix the paper around the frame, position the paper and make diagonal cuts around the trim (figure F). Smooth the rest of the strip into the molding.
11. For this project, it took about five hours to hang all of the wallpaper (figure G).
