    Hearth Construction

    1. A hearth will protect the flooring and create a stable place to install the stove.

    2. To make the hearth, cut two pieces of 3/4-inch plywood. In this project, b/c grade plywood was used because it has a rougher finish (figure A).

    3. To get the 1-1/2 inch thickness needed for the hearth, apply glue to one board and sandwich them together (figure B). Secure with 1-1/4 inch screws (figure C).

    4. For design, cut off the two front corners of the frame (figure D).

    5. To cover the rough edges of the plywood, use 1-3/4 inch trim and attach it to the plywood so that it stands proud about a quarter inch (figure E). The lip will receive the slate tile later.

    6. Once the glue sets, conceal the nail holes with putty.

    7. Sand the surface smooth with a hand sander (figure F).

    8. Install the tile on top of the hearth (figure G). Once the tile is all dry fit, cut the pieces to proper dimension with a wet tile saw.

    9. Once the thin set mortar is mixed, spread a coat onto the surface of the plywood (figure H).

    10. Place the tiles in position.

    11. Finish by filling the gaps between the tiles with grout (figure I).

    12. Mix the grout with water until it has a smooth consistency. The idea is to mash the grout into the space with a float and trowel.

    13. Once the hearth is complete, set it in place (figure J) and get ready to install the gas stove.
