    Drywall/Prep Around Skylight

    1. Once the skylight is in place, install drywall around the perimeter (figure A).

    2. Use a sure form to level the drywall (figure B).

    3. Install a corner bead to secure the corner form (figure C). Attach with cupped head nails. These types of nails accept mud better than other nails.

    4. Tape the corners and apply the first coat of mud. Also, apply mud to the corner beading and feather it out even (figure D).

    5. Once the mud dries, apply another coat, lightly sand and then apply the topping compound.

    6. Once the mud is dry, smooth the surfaces with an 80-grit sanding mesh.

    7. When the dust is removed, the walls are prepared for primer (figure E). It is important to prime the walls because mud is porous.

    8. The primer blended the area between the drywall and the tape.

    9. The drying time of primer depends on the temperature, but in this project it was about an hour.
