Furring Walls
1. To address the issue of the wall being uneven with the foundation, the homeowners decide to fur out the wall with 2x4s and actually build out the depth of the wall so that the wall is level with the foundation.
2. To fur out the walls, 2x4s are cut (figure A).
3. Use screws to attach the boards to the studs (figure B). Also, use a string level to make certain the 2x4s are even with each other (figure C). It is important to keep the 2x4s level, making them parallel so that the drywall will be attached evenly later (figure D).
4. With the walls still open, it is a good time to plan out where the utilities will run inside the walls (figure E). In this project, a licensed electrician installed junction boxes where the new electrical outlets (power and phone lines) would be placed.
5. Also, take this time to plan out the future of the existing gas line (figure F). In this project, the homeowners decided to use the line for a stove that will be installed later.
6. Next, install the insulation in the wall (figure G), and then the drywall.
Skylight Preparation
1. To support the skylight, friend and contractor Kevin installed 2x6s using framing hangers and nailing them into the existing beams (figure H).
2. Next, an electrical box for the skylight is installed.
