Materials: flashing paper OSB plywood staple gun/hammer tack exterior caulking rubberized flashing (Bituthene) insulation (by the bat or roll) Paslode nail guns (framing and finish) Wall Framing/French Door Installation 1. Measure out for the wall studs 16 inches apart (figure A). 2. Frame in the wall and the new doorway making certain that the studs are straight and even (figure B). The whole process should take about one hour. 3. Install a trimmer stud that is pre-treated (figure C). 4. Oriented strand board (OSB) will be cut and used to attach to the wall studs (figure D). 5. Attach the OSB using ring shank nails (figure E).
6. Once the plywood is up, use a chalk line to mark the position of the studs.7. Next, weatherproofing the opening is the task. 8. Start by installing a sill pan (figure F). Use glue to join the pieces together. Place bricks to hold the pieces together while the glue dries (figure G).
9. Apply caulking to weatherproof the area of the sill. Use two continuous thick beads of caulking to keep out moisture (figure H).10. Seal the entrance with flashing paper (figure I). This will help water from seeping in and protect the OSB.
11. Slide in the French door (figure J). Once in place, it is time to level with shims. Start at the bottom and work your way to the top. Then, use 3-inch exterior screws to anchor the frame. Cut off the shims and add a final barrier to moisture. Install a bituthane membrane (figure K).12. Add the flashing paper (figure L). 13. Later, stucco will be added and this wall/door is complete.
