    PVC Engineered Trim

Exposure is wood trim's worst enemy. Moisture, changing temperatures, UV light and insects attack exterior trim and cut short its useful life. Using PVC (polyvinyl chloride) trim in place of wood is often better because it won't swell, rot, split, delaminate, cup or craze under harsh conditions (figure A). Yet, it's workable as wood. You can nail, glue, drill, rout and cut PVC trim using the same tools you would use with wood.

    PVC Tips:

    • When fastening pieces of PVC trim to each other, it's usually best to use the adhesive that comes with the particular brand of PVC trim you choose (figure B). This will guarantee a good bond and an excellent color match. You can also use PVC cement or a high quality polyurethane adhesive. Do not use a silicone based product, it will not form a good bond.

    • When fastening pieces of PVC trim together, use any rust proof woodworking fasteners, like stainless steel nails or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners (figure C). Usually pre-drilling is not required unless you are installing the PVC trim in low temperatures or using very large fasteners. Check the guidelines for your particular brand of PVC trim. Often your PVC trim will come with a filler to fill nail holes and match color.

    • To clean PVC trim, you can use household cleaners like bleach-based scrubbing soaps and a brush. Do not use cleaners containing acid or solvents like acetone. Ground in stains can be removed with 100 grit sandpaper and light sanding.

    • You can paint most PVC trim boards, but they usually do not require paint for protection. Paint can be applied to get a matching color to your existing trim. Use interior or exterior 100% acrylic latex paint or whatever your particular brand of PVC trim suggests.
