    The DIY to the Rescue crew is at the home of Don and Lolita Johnson to solve a big problem with their backyard; they can't get to it! The Johnsons need a deck and back door to maximize the enjoyment of their Chicago home.

    Chalk line
    Miter box or miter saw
    Tape measure
    Finish nailer
    Finish nails
    Framing nailer
    Hammer
    Nail punch
    Lumber
    Masonry brackets
    Fasteners

    Building a Deck

    1. Measure and lay out the location for the post anchors.

    2. Install post anchors using masonry bit and masonry fasteners (figure A).

    3. Remove siding from house for ledger.

    4. Attach double 2x10 ledger to the house using lag screws and treated lumber.

    5. Set posts in place and fasten with lag bolts (figure B).

    6. Build exterior rim of the frame.

    7. Install treated 2x10 joists using joist hangers.

    8. Attach 2x12 stair stringers.

    9. Attach 2x10 cedar stair treads.

    10. Install 1-1/4x6 cedar floor boards.

    11. Install cedar railing and balusters.
