  • Bookcase Door: Getting Started
  • From "Weekend Handyman"
    episode WKH-407

Host Paul Ryan begins by determining what size bookcase door he will need and then goes through all of the parts and tools that come with the door. He preps the closet for the new door, taking off the trim and existing door. Then, he begins assembling the bookcases with cams, screws, glue and nails.

    Assembling the Bookshelf Door

    1. To remove the closet door, remove the door hinges with the door strike and mallet (figure A).

    2. To build the bookcases, start by putting the cam locks into the cavities on the fixed shelves (figure B). It is important that the cams are centered and facing toward the edge.

    3. Use a rubber mallet to ensure that they’re seated correctly. Use a white rubber mallet when working with white painted woodwork, that way you don’t leave scuff marks on the white painted surface (figure C).

    4. Use fixed shelf pins to secure fixed shelves into the side panels of the bookcase (figure D). Put the middle shelf at 36 inches, because it is counter height and a good place to display items.

    5. Make sure to dry fit all of the pieces together before you start nailing so you have all the finished sides facing the same way (figure E).

    6. Once everything is in place, tighten the cams (figure F).

    7. Before attaching the back of the shelving unit, mark the fixed shelves so you’ll know where to nail (figure G).

    8. Secure the back panel with a bead of wood glue to the rabbited edges, making sure that the bookcase is square so that the corners line up perfectly (figure H). Line up your marks you made on the fixed shelves so you have a nailing schedule (figure I).

    9. Use an impulse nailer to secure the back of the bookshelf into place (figure J). Nail about every six inches both down the sides of the bookcase and across the shelves.
