    1. To create the base around each column, measure 3 sides of the post. Transfer these measurements to 5" base trim molding.

    2. Cut 45-degree angles on the molding for the corners.

    3. Add wood glue to the corners of 3 sides of the molding, then join pieces together (figure A). Assembling three pieces will allow you to dry-fit the pieces and check the angles. Add the three pieces section to the column.

    4. Measure for the last piece, cut, test for fit and glue and nail to the other three pieces of molding already on the column (figure B).

    5. Use a torpedo level to make sure the entire trim box sits level on the post -- not the porch. Nail the entire unit to the column using the trim nailer.

    6. Create the capital at top from 1 x 4 stock. Clamp a board to work surface, use a router to cut a decorative edge into the wood to create an ogee profile.

    7. Measure the sides of the columns, cut on the miter saw, then nail into place (figure C).

    8. Add trim pieces against the canopy underside. Add trim around the top of both columns to add top capitals.

    9. Fill all holes with indoor/outdoor wood spackling. Caulk all seams along the base (figure D) and capitals -- and caulk the corners of the 1" trim.

    10. Finally, sand the spackled areas and paint the columns, capitals and bases. Add multiple coats of paint as needed (figure E).
