After: An handsome portico with a dash of panache!
Does the front entry of your home need a little extra oomph? This project -- the creation of a portico with fluted columns and a copper canopy -- can increase your home's curb appeal.

Before beginning this project, you will need to take careful measurements and select an awning/canopy design for fabrication. Allow about 6-8 weeks for fabrication.

Once the canopy arrives, center and fasten securely over the doorway. You'll probably need assistance to hold the canopy in place while it's secured.

On a project difficulty scale of 1-5 (5 being most difficult), this project rates a 2.

    Materials:

    Custom-fabricated canopy/awning
    1 x 6, 1 x 8, 1 x 4 and 1 x 2 lumber
    A variety of molding
    1" trim
    Silicon caulk
    1/4" birch plywood
    Cotton gloves
    Paint

    1. First, measure the width of the porch (figure A), and mark the center of the measurement with a piece of tape that's easily visible.

    2. Mark wall to get proper height. Use two levels to transfer the line on the porch to the soldier's course over the doorway. Also mark with a piece of tape (figure B).

    3. Locate the center point on the canopy's frame and mark it as well (figure C).

    4. With the measurements marked, it's time to position and secure the canopy. Align the marks, then mark the anchor locations in the mortar joints of the bricks. Mark the sides where a mortar joint meets the copper edge trim.

    5. Drill holes for anchors on the marks using a metal drill bit (figure D).

    6. Raise the canopy back into position and mark hole locations in the mortar joints using a masonry bit. Pre-drill all the mounting holes (figure E) and insert wall anchors.

    7. Secure the canopy to the house using 1-1/2" stainless steel screws (figure F). Work first across the top, then down the sides.

    8. Pre-drill the 1 x 2 brace along the bottom of the canopy frame, staying in-line with the mortar joints. Tighten 2-1/2" coated masonry screws through the bracing.

    9. Apply a heavy bead of silicone caulk to the edge where the canopy meets the home's exterior surface (figure G).
