Faux Painting with Wood Graining Simulation

To simulate the cherry-wood finish of the newly installed cabinets, painting expert Kathryn Vork Waryan demonstrated how to create this effect with faux painting.

    1. Start the prep work by priming the wood with one coat of fresh-start primer.

    2. Two coats of paint are used for the base.

    3. Then you need to glaze. To make the glaze, use one part paint and four parts commercially available glazing liquid.

Tip: You can create your own custom color glaze by using artists acrylic paints. Add them to the glazing liquid to get the color you want. For this project a glaze was made from approximately two cups of glazing liquid tinted with acrylic paints from an art supply store. The colors used were raw umber, burnt umber, a drop of red and a small amount of green and yellow ochre.

    4. Brush on the glaze and flog with a long bristled flogging brush (figure A)

    5. Repeat to build up the color, but the second coat is optional.

    6. Allow to dry, preferably overnight.

      Graining

    7. Use a latex paint mixed with glazing liquid, in which case you should choose a medium-dark color and start with the one part paint to four parts glazing liquid, checking the color after it has dried on a sample, lighten or darken as necessary.

    8. Apply glaze and brush it out nicely. Pull a graining comb (figure B) through the glaze changing the angle of the comb as you pull it through the glaze. Practice on a sample first.

    9. Soften the lines of the graining comb with your badger brush or soft bristled brush by barely touching the surface and feathering out the lines.

    10. Use the artist's brush or Q-tips to add some detail to the knots or grained lines (figure C).

    11. To create knots in the wood -- if so desired -- draw in the knots with the burlap and comb around them with the graining comb.

    12. Allow to dry.

    13. Protect the grained surfaces with two coats of a latex varnish in a satin finish.

Creating the Center Kitchen Island with Modular Cabinets

    14. You can create any configuration you desire by ordering the specific modular cabinets needed.

    15. Simply attach the cabinets the same way you attached the other cabinets.

Note: Once you attached the modular cabinets in the configuration desired, you "will" be able to move the entire island around in order to install the dishwasher and refrigerator. You will secure the entire island after the countertop and stovetop are installed later (in the final episode).

    16. The final step of Pt. 3 of this "Contemporary" kitchen renovation is to attach the stainless steel handles to the cabinet doors.

In the final episode, Ryan and the homeowners will install the beautiful granite countertops and accent the granite with a stylish sink and faucet. Also, the new space will be lit with dramatic pendent fixtures. Finally, the stainless steel appliances are brought in to combine style with practicality for this eye-catching contemporary kitchen.
