| Marine Battery Chargers: Installing a Battery Charger |
From "Shipshape Boating" episode DSSB-211 |
|
|
Host John Greviskis installs a dual bank battery charger with a built in smart charger, on his project boat.
- Before installing an on board battery charger, look for a place that is out of the weather. Also, find out how long the chargers leads are to determine how close to the battery the charger should be for connection. Warning: do not extend leads past its original length without first consulting with a professional marine electrician.
- Once you have located a place out of the weather, mark for the holes (figure A). When drilling into the fiberglass, be sure to not go through to the other side.
- Hold the charger in place and tighten down the stainless steel self-tapping screws. Use silicone around each screw (figure B) to keep the holes water tight.
Take the positive lead on the charger to the positive terminal on the battery. Then take the negative lead from the charger to the negative terminal on the battery.Tie the appropriate black ground wire to the negative terminal on the battery.
