| Installing Base Cabinets and Solid Countertops |
From "DIY to the Rescue" episode DTTR-101 |
|
|
With the upper cabinets securely hung, the DIY to the Rescue crew moves to the floor. Host Karl Champley teaches Chris and Lexi Scott the most efficient way of performing the installation.
- Before beginning, the water main is turned off, and the shut-off valves are removed for easy installation of cabinets over the pipes.
- Karl measures up from the floor to center of pipe opening at sink, then measures horizontally from the edge of the cabinet to center of pipe. A hole is drilled in the back interior surface to match these measurements.
- A spade bit is used to drill holes for the water supply lines.
- For a corner cabinet, ledger boards are drilled to the wall to add structural support and stability (figure A). Then, The sink base cabinet is positioned and checked for plumb and level. It's secured first to the nearest cabinet (figure B), then to the wall.
- After Chris and Lexi talk with a countertop expert and select a new solid countertop, the experts get to work creating a countertop template and cutting the sections needed (solid countertop installation can be tricky for a do-it-yourselfer, and is best left to a professional in most instances). The countertops are measured, cut and set into place. Joints are glued, clamped and allowed to set (about 15 minutes). Once set, the joint seam is wet sanded (possible only on this type of solid countertop surface) to eradicate its appearance and make it virtually undetectable.
