This week Weekend Handyman host Paul Ryan demonstrates the Tru-Grip clamp guide that makes getting the perfect cut easy.

When you have to make a cut along a long piece of wood, often this can be a problem unless you have a great tool to assist you. Here are some guides that can help:

    • Level -- Yes, a level can be of great help. All you have to do is line it up (figure A) so that the saw blade is in the right area. Clamp it into place and you'll have a good solid surface for the saw bed to ride along.

    • Tru-Grip Guide and Clamp -- A cutting guide and clamp in one that makes your job that much easier. Line it up on the cutting surface and make sure the cutting blade is where you want it. Slide the clamp into place, lock it down and cut. This particular tool will allow you to make cuts up to 50" long.

    • Plunge-Cut Saw and Mobile Dust Extractor -- This cutting guide is unique because it comes with its own saw and dust-collection system. Expensive (approximately $750 purchased together) and high-end, this unit has a number of great features:

      1. It slides down into the wood so you can make a plunge cut.

      2. It slides smoothly along its aluminum track (figure B).

      3. The blade can pivot, which allows you to make up to a 45-degree bevel cut right at the edge of the guide.

      4. It has a proprietary clamping system (figure C) that holds the guide in place.
