    Tips:

    • You can disguise your air-conditioning unit by planting shrubs around it. Just be sure to maintain 18 inches of clearance on all sides to allow adequate ventilation.

    • Clear away plants and other debris from your air-conditioning unit and check the filter to ensure a cool and comfortable summer.

    • A lighted candle or incense stick moved near the edges of closed doors and windows will tell you where the air leaks are. To exaggerate the effect, open a door opposite the windblown side of the house.

    • When your fireplace isn't in use, be sure you're not losing heated air through the chimney. Remember always to keep the damper closed except when a fire is burning.

    • Make quick work of measuring lumber by marking off 10 feet of your shop floor in 6-inch increments. Keep a small ruler handy for in-between measurements.

    • Securing a furnace filter to the intake side of a box fan creates an inexpensive air cleaner. It will do a great job of cleaning dust from the air when you're power-sanding.
