Harvey Gates, a telecommunications professor with the University of Colorado, advocates that all families subscribe to some type of wireless service -- for safety reasons as well as convenience.

During the past decade, personal technology has changed contemporary society, and one of the chief areas of change has been in personal communication. Though some aspects of personal technology have been criticized for causing people to become more isolated from one another, there are other facets of the phenomenon that are specifically geared to help people stay in touch. Some modern devices -- if used wisely -- can help family members stay in contact and enhance lines of communication.

To illustrate the family uses of communication technology, DIY Home Technology followed a family of five -- the Totura family -- as they went through the process of assessing and selecting some personal communication devices to help family communication.

Ken Totura, the father, is a vice-president of sales for a computer network firm. His job requires that he travel frequently. Mom Cama Jo is the swimming coordinator at a local community center. The three children -- Kelsey, Gannon and Tia -- all attend different schools, but each participates on a swim team. Because of her participation with the swim team, Cama Jo makes several trips daily to and from the community center while coordinating transportation to school and the community center for the three children. A busy family like this, with multiple schedules to juggle, can definitely benefit from certain communication technologies to help them stay in touch throughout the day.

Some of the communication devices that are available to families like the Toturas include the following:

    • Cellular phones
    • Pagers
    • Walkie-talkies
    • Personal digital assistants (PDAs).
The list of personal devices like these continues to grow longer as new technologies emerge, and the choices within each individual category of devices can be intimidating. Once mastered, however, some do offer benefits that can include enhanced safety as well as convenience.

The segments that follow in this episode of DIY Home Technology look at some specific applications of technologies like those listed above, and how they worked for the Totura family.
