    Not many people have electricity under the kitchen sink. But that doesn't mean they can't have a garbage disposal. New disposals are available that operate by water pressure alone (figure A).

    Water jets force food particles into the stainless-steel cutter blades (figure B), which act like a food processor under the sink. The disposal can handle almost any type of food waste, including banana peels, celery and nuts.

    Traditional disposals cut food into stringy particles (figure C). A water-powered disposal grinds food into granules that won't clog your drain (figure D).

    A typical water-powered disposal costs about $300.
