  • Backyard Prefab: T House Construction
  • From "Assembly Required"
    episode DASR-203

In Ojai, California, Leslie Davis and her family prepare for their own version of a backyard prefab structure, a T House. The "T" in the T House takes its name from Tony Gwilliam, the British architect who created the T House design.

    T House Construction

T Houses are created in his factory in Ojai, and shipped out to customers like Leslie as a do-it-yourself kit. Roger House and Pat Perrault are two of Tony's apprentices who will be on hand for the build to help Leslie speed along construction. She helps assemble the Douglass Fir frame while Pat sets the main floor beam into the pre-cut notch, securing it with bolts. Pat and Roger then lift the frame and set it on stone pavers to raise it off the gravel foundation. Now it's time to level and square the house, the most critical part of the build. Luckily, the site is pretty even to begin with.

Thanks to the prefab construction, the crew quickly bolts together each piece of the hand-built frame. In just five hours, Leslie Davis' family has a finished T House complete with a Kotatsu table, shades and curtains.

Leslie and Kenley have great plans to enjoy their T House. Since its arrival, their kids have spent every moment enjoying nature, while their parents look forward to the meditative aspects of their backyard getaway.
