  • LV Home: The Ferriter Family
  • From "Assembly Required"
    episode DASR-112

In Doylestown, Wisconsin, empty nesters George and Sue Ferriter have found the perfect place in which to settle. Sue was attracted to the LV design by the prospect of a magnificent view, while George liked the middle ground the LV provides: an architect’s creativity while maintaining the efficiency of prefab.

    The LV shell is complete!
    The Ferriter Family

Step one is a stick-built floor, however, and the crew struggles to adjust to the complicated engineering of the "I" joist floor system and the absence of some essential non-kit items. Sue saves the day with a trip to the hardware store, but there is another obstacle—confusion over the three sheer walls, which will carry the entire wind load for the house. After things have been sorted out, the crew works hard and is able to complete the floor after two days.

They begin to set the first exterior wall panel and the home begins to take shape. The prefab components are assembled in a climate controlled factory, bringing them as close to perfection as possible. As the crew assembles the sturdy home shell, Rocio arrives on site to check on the progress, and to compliment the crew on their adaptability and craftsmanship.

As the time comes for heavy structural beams to be set, and Derek calls in extra troops, Mother Nature decides to shake things up—a tornado is on the horizon. Thankfully, in a few scary minutes the storm passes by—giving the team enough of an adrenaline boost to kick it into high gear as they continue to work on the rest of the house. Forty-nine roof trusses and high strength fasteners contribute to a structure that one member of the crew says could withstand a hurricane.

After a tough week, the crew installs the final piece to this modern puzzle, the faux wall panels. They’ve created something unique; it’s not only a new home, it’s part of the new prefab.
