The O'Briant FamilyBefore they can break ground, the couple must choose their design (figure A). Many Deltec homeowners opt for an open floor plan, but Arleen wants to stick to a traditional layout with separated rooms. They meet with Deltecs Chad Moore to talk about their design sketches and get the ball rolling. They create a two-story, 3,000 square foot round home with stick-built add-ons like a stairwell and 600 foot deck (figure B). Eddie and Arleen are ready to build, but the couple must convince the neighborhood review committee that a round house will fit into their square neighborhood. The O'Briants build was not without challenges. After receiving approval from their neighborhood review committee, Eddie had some problems as the new general contractor in town and tools were stolen twice from the build site. To keep spirits high and move the family out of their cramped rental, everyone pitched in - from digging the footers for the pre-cast foundation to raising panels to finish the work. It was those boosts that helped the family keep moving through seven extra months of interior work. Even though they didnt get the speed prefab is famous for, Deltecs kit provided Eddie and Arleens family ease of assembly so they could take part in it together. The finished product looks amazing (figure C).
