Backyard Votive Fire Pit

Backyard Votive Fire Pit

Materials:

6 large fireplace logs
permanent marker
8-10 clear votive holders
safety goggles
2" boring bit
power drill
Gallery Glass paint: red, amber and yellow
waxed paper
copper wire
wire clippers

1. Lay three logs horizontally; stack two logs on top and perpendicular to the bottom three. Stack the last log on top of the top two to form a pyramid (figure A).

2. Using a votive holder as a guide, mark the placement for one votive holder on each of the bottom three logs with a permanent marker. Mark placement for votive holders on the two exposed top tiers of logs as well (figure B).

3. Wearing safety goggles and working with a 2" boring bit, drill 1/4"-1/2" deep wells for the votive holders at the marked spots (figure C).

4. Paint the votive holders, using Gallery Glass. Layer three colors to create flames on each of the glass votives, making squiggles and flame shapes with the nozzle of the bottle (figure D). Place the votive holders on waxed paper to dry.

5. Wrap copper wire around one of the bottom logs; tie the wire off to secure it in place. Make several wire loops around the log before wrapping the three bottom logs together in a figure-eight wrap (figure E). Wrap the perimeter of the three logs with wire, cut the wire with wire cutters and wrap the end of the wire to tie it off (figure F). Repeat at the opposite end of the bottom three logs.

6. Wrap the top pyramid of logs in the same manner. Stack the pyramid on the bottom three logs.

7. Place glass votives filled with tea lights in the log wells (figure G).
