Ask DIY pet experts Stephanie Zielinsky and Joel Tatum offer some tips on caring for your dog's ears. - Ear infections can be a real problem for dogs, and may eventually require veterinary care. But there are steps you can take to help prevent ear problems by keeping your dog's ears clean. Some dogs even enjoy having their ears cleaned.
- Use an ear wash to treat your dog's ears. You can purchase commercially prepared ear wash from pet-supply stores, or you can make an ear wash using a mixture of one-part white vinegar to two parts water.
- Dip a clean cotton ball into the ear wash, squeeze out any excess liquid and use the moistened cotton to gently swab out your dog's ear. When you finish this part of the process, your dog will probably shake his head to get rid of the excess liquid left in the ear.
- Next, dip the end of a cotton swab in the wash and use it to carefully swab out the narrow parts inside the ear.
- Important: Don't insert the cotton swab too far into the ear canal. You'll know that you've gone too far if you can no longer see the end of the swab.
- Take the opportunity to take a good look at your dog's ears. If you notice anything abnormal, consult your veterinarian.
