The steps are easy to follow, but creativity and an artistic "eye" are necessary to create detailed leather pieces with western flair!

Hobbyist Wayne Christensen shares his technique for creating intricately designed leather pieces:

    1. First, he traces an outline of the piece onto the leather.

    2. Next, he carves the pattern onto dampened leather.

    3. After the initial carving, he uses a stylus to retrace a decorative pattern onto the wet leather. Later, he uses a hammer and stylus to create dimension.

    4. He hand-paints impressions are other details.

    5. After detail work has been completed, he stains the leather with a sponge, leaving the stain on until the desired color is achieved.

    6. Finally, Christensen punches the edges and laces the pieces together.
