Although actual neon has a red-orange appearance, argon and mercury create a "blue" appearance.

Don Golden's interest in neon started with a visit to the Neon Museum of Art in Los Angeles more than 14 years ago. The illuminated pieces transformed Golden's appreciation of the art and led him to what he calls his "niche."

To create neon art, Golden begins with a sketch. After completing a final sketch indicating colors and materials, he has a glass blower -- or "bender" -- bring his design to life. The tubes are filled with gases that glow when lit, which Golden also leaves to a professional. Golden wires the pieces himself -- sometimes integrating them into his home as permanent decorative sculptures.
