    Day One Continued

    Assembling the Walls

For this particular gazebo kit, host Paul Ryan will be assembling five main walls and two regular walls that will go on each side of the doorway.

    1. Attach the 1x4 bottom brace into the dado with four screws.

    2. Mark where the spindles will attach to the fillet (figure A).

Note: The kit will come with spacers that show you where to make the marks. It saves time to make the mark with the spacer, then transfer the markings using a framing square.

    3. Attach the spindles using two 1/4" crown staples and an air gun.

    4. Attach the second fillet to the other end of the spindles.

    5. Stand it up and put the spindle section onto the 2x4 base, line it up and staple it down (figure B).

    6. Flip the stapled spindle over and staple the rail cap to the other fillet.

    7. Assemble the upper baluster sections, and because the rails are thicker you'll need to use a finish nailer.

    8. Attach the corner posts (figure C) to the end of the railing section (previous step) with screws. Be sure to put two screws into the bottom rail, one screw into the bottom brace and two screws into the top rail.

    9. Do this to each rail section.

    10. Once all the wall sections are assembled, it's time to raise the walls. Stand two walls up and attach them to each other with five screws in each corner from each side. Continue attaching the rest of the wall sections (figure D).

    11. Walk around the perimeter to make sure the walls are 1/2" in from the edge of the floor.

Note: Even though it's not in the manufacturer's instructions, expert Mark Peterson recommends that you don't attach the upper balusters section at this time. It's easier to do this step later because it gives you more access to screw the corner posts together.

    12. It's time to screw the corner posts into the deck boards, and Ryan starts with the corner posts that go near the door opening (figure E).

    13. Start by pre-drilling the holes. Drill at an angle to the deck and use 3" square screws.

Note: Corner posts should line up where the deck boards meet.

    14. Attach the rest of the corner posts.

    15. Next, the headers need to be installed on the notches on the top corner posts. Take two header boards, screw them together at the corners and do this three times, which will save you time during the installation.

    16. Lift the header up and set it on a corner-post notch (figure F), and then screw the header into the corner posts, two screw into each 2x4.
