Time: 18 hours over two days.

    Difficulty Rating: It's rated a 2 on a scale of 1 to 5.

    Materials for Complete Project:

Play system (including lumber, hardware and accessories)
    Open end wrenches
    Socket wrench and sockets
    2 deep sockets (9/16" and 3/4")
    Electric impact wrench

Kits: When it comes to playground kits, you can get everything from a basic swing set to a small city, with loads of fun accessories from which to choose. Figure to pay anywhere from $500 for a basic set to $3,000 - $5,000 for the more elaborate backyard amusement parks. Most systems come with lumber, but you can buy kits that contain only the hardware and accessories. You supply the lumber. This way can save money, but it is more time consuming.

Woods: Natural woods like redwood and cedar are commonplace for outdoor playground structures. They're both rot and insect resistant but a bit pricey. A more affordable alternative is to use pressure treated pine (figure A), which is some cases can be even stronger and longer lasting than natural woods.

Site Preparation: Determine the location for the playground set and be sure that it's at least six feet (figure B -- illustration) from any obstructions, such as a garage or fence, and it must be fairly level.

    1. Gather tools and materials.

    2. Put the base of the deck out and adjust the level with dirt.

    3. Remove the base and lay down the landscape fabric (figure C). This will prevent weeds from growing under the deck.

    4. Place the bottom of the deck back into position.

    5. Top the deck assembly.

    6. Put the top deck over the bottom deck (figure D).
