After you clean your deck, you may want to use a clear or tinted sealant to change the look of it. Any product you consider should offer protection from water, mold and ultraviolet radiation. Clear wood preservatives protect the wood's natural look (figure A). They can be reapplied without first stripping the old preservative. Tinted preservatives add a little color to the wood (figure B) and are available in a variety of shades. Deck stains add even more color to the deck. They may be semitransparent or opaque (figure C). Apply stains with a paint sprayer, not a garden sprayer. Wood preservatives may be applied with a garden sprayer or a paint roller.
