    Bedroom

In the log-cabin bedroom, furniture-placement options are somewhat restricted since there are windows on two walls and closet doors on a third. After several placement options had been considered, the bed was placed directly in front of the double window (figure A).

A nightstand with a natural-wood top was added next to the bed (figure B), and a rough-finish blanket chest, painted black, was added beneath the single window on the adjoining wall (figure C). Because of its size and shape, the blanket chest not only provides extra storage but also serves as a window seat.

    • Design Tip: When you have a narrow expanse of wall, "think vertically." A tall furnishing will utilize the space better and add height to the perceived scale of the room.
Rather than an ordinary six-drawer dresser, a tall armoire was selected for use in a narrow section of wall between a window and the room's corner (figure D). The height of the piece adds to the total storage space and raises the visual line of the room.

The armoire (figure E) was given an antique-look finish by first painting the piece black, then painting over the black with a turquoise antiquing finish.

As in the various areas of the great room, creative use of unmatched wooden furnishings is preferred in the casual, relaxed ambiance of the cabin.

    Baths

The appearance of the bathrooms was already fairly established by the installation of wood-paneled vanity, mirrors and a decorative tile floor. Bathroom treatments consist mainly of selecting a few accessories.

In the master bath, a wooden chair placed next to the tub (figure F) makes a nice furnishing for sitting or for placing towels or other bath items. The chair selected has a rough, distressed-paint finish.

The half-bath (figure G) doubles as a laundry room and houses the stacking washer/dryer unit. The only additions to the half-bath at this point are a few accessories, which are detailed in the following segment.
