Click on the captioned image to download a video of WEB-EXCLUSIVE footage shot during the production of DIY's Build a Log Cabin workshop. This download is a streaming-video montage showing the installation of the flagstone walkway leading up to the front-porch through the cabin's front yard. This video was not included in the broadcast, and can only be seen on DIYnetwork.com.
Decorative Stone Walkway Following is a summary of the video segment: - A stone walkway was designed to match and complement the flagstone front-porch. The first stone is placed, centered at the approach to the front-porch.
- Additional stones are placed that will form the section of the walkway directly in front of the porch (figure A). The stones are laid out to determine the best placement before they are permanently installed.
- For a visually interesting arrangement, the owner decides on a stone pathway that encircles a large tree in the cabin's front yard. The desired radius of the circle is determined, and measurements are taken (figure B) to mark off a perfect circle with the tree located in the center.
- The landscapers begin placing a ring of stones around the circumference of the circle (figure C).
- A rope guide is used to mark off the circle so that the stones can be laid out accurately (figure D). A tape measure is also used to periodically measure the distance from the tree to the center of the stones at the perimeter of the circle.
- Having a number of participants in this project, helping to unload and place stones, makes the job go more quickly. More stones are put into place until the entire walkway is laid out (figure E).
- Once the entire walkway has been laid out, the landscapers go back and begin digging out shallow indentations for placing the stones (figure F) so that their top surfaces are flush with ground level. The stones themselves are used as templates for digging out the indentations with shovels.
- With each of the holes carefully dug out, each stone is put in place for a snug fit.
- The placement of the large stone located at the entrance to the porch is particularly important. The flat stone is angled away from the porch so that rainwater will drain away from the house.
