This download segment is a montage of behind-the-scenes footage, presented without narration, showing the preparation and installation of the concrete front-porch pad. This video was not included in the broadcast, and can only be seen by visiting diynet.com.

    Front-Porch Pad

Following is a summary of the video segment:

    • The process of installing the front-porch pad begins by first pouring gravel into the front-porch area.

    • Gravel is shoveled into the area between the front-porch pad and the block wall that rests on the foundation footer.

    • A wooden form is built to create an outline structure that will contain the poured concrete.

    • The gravel foundation is sprayed with an insecticide treatment to help prevent termite infestation (figure A).

    • The gravel is leveled, and steel reinforcement is laid down on top of the gravel (figure B). Individual sections of steel reinforcement are connected together to create a reinforcing grid that will add structural strength to the finished pad.

    • The completed wooden form (figure C) is ready for the concrete pour.

    • Concrete is poured into the form (figure D), spread and tamped down.

    • The freshly poured concrete is leveled (figure E) using a screed board .

    • A float is used to smooth the surface of the wet concrete so that it will dry to form a smooth pad surface (figure F).
