With most of the woodwork on the cabin interior finished (hardwood floors, cabinets, wainscoting, wood trim, etc.), the next phase of completion involves installation of plumbing and electrical fixtures and kitchen appliances. These installations represent the last main phase in the overall cabin-interior project. After this phase, the cabin will be ready for interior decoration and addition of custom accessories.
Electrical Fixtures
At this point, the bulk of the electrical wiring has been installed. Now the installation of electrical fixtures such as overhead lights, outlets and switches can begin.
Safety Alert: Though some electrical installations are relatively simple, it's critical that even basic electrical work be done by someone knowledgeable about electricity and electrical connections. If you lack expertise in installing electrical fixtures, leave these jobs to the professionals. Following is a summary of the installations that were performed by professional electricians in our log-cabin project.
Plumbing Fixtures To simplify installation, the plumbers attach the faucets to the sinks before the sinks are installed (figure J) rather than afterward. - With the faucet attached, the plumbers carefully set the first of the two master-bathroom sinks in place in the precut opening in the countertop (figure K). The sink is secured to the countertop with a bead of silicone adhesive applied around the opening.
- For the shower in the master bath, the shower faucet must be assembled in a specific order. First a metal outer ring is put in place, followed by an inner ring (figure L) and finally the controller handle (figure M), which is attached to the control valve.
- The tub spout (figure N) and matching shower head (figure O) are installed next. The shower head extends through a hole cut in the cypress trim that was installed earlier.
- After chiseling out some of the grout around the drain for the commode in the half-bath (figure P), the plumber cuts off the excess length of PVC pipe that was fitted earlier.
- Measurements are taken for installation of the commode, and four holes are drilled in the tile using a carbide bit.
- A sleeve is bonded permanently to the drain opening, and a collar is attached to the holes drilled in the tile (figure Q).
- A wax ring is placed on top of the opening, and the plumbers then set the one-piece commode assembly in place (figure R). The base of the commode is bolted to the collar and secured with nuts.
- The sink in the half-bath attaches to a wall bracket and rests on a set of legs that the plumbers assemble under it (figure S).
Kitchen Appliances, Part 1 - The dishwasher is installed in the premeasured opening in the base cabinets. Once in place, secure the dishwasher connections to the water supply.
- In the area behind the refrigerator, the plumbers snap the plastic collar in place around the water supply for the refrigerator's icemaker.
- They then attach one end of the copper supply line to the shutoff valve (figure T). The opposite end is secured to the connection at the back of the refrigerator (figure U).
- With the water connections secured, the refrigerator is carefully moved into place (figure V).
