Insulation is rated by number. R-15 insulation is suitable for insertion between wall studs such as in the attic of the cabin.

    Insulation Tips

With the the propane heating system installed in the cabin, the next concern is how to insulate to keep the warmed air from escaping during winter months.

R-15 insulation is installed between the 2x4 wall studs such as in the cabin's attic. The insulation is cut to length, then installed between the studs by stapling the tabbed paper edges where they overlap the wood studs.

Loose pieces of insulation can be packed into cracks and crevices such as the gaps that may surround windows (figure A). Avoid packing the insulation too tightly. Loosely packed insulation is more effective since it is actually the air between fibers that provides much of the insulating property.

In smaller cracks and narrow openings, spray foam insulation may be used to fill in hard-to-reach spaces. The spray foam comes in an aerosol form and is sprayed into small openings by means of a directing nozzle (figure B). Avoid using too much since it expands as it sets. If you overspray, you'll need to go back later and trim off any excess.

Heavier R-30 insulation is installed between roof rafters, since much of heating and cooling is lost via the ceiling and roof surface. Before installing the roof insulation, however, plastic baffles must be installed (figure C) to allow for adequate airflow between the vents at the roof apex and the lower vents in the rafter tails.

Plastic baffles are attached to the underside of the plywood roof decking using staples prior to installing insulation. With the baffles in place, the R-30 insulation can be installed between the rafters (figure D).

This arrangement (figure E) allows for effective insulation with adequate airflow and ventilation.

Safety Precaution: If you decide to do your own insulation work, wear a particle mask to avoid breathing in bits of insulation fiber. Wear long sleeves to avoid unnecessary contact of your skin with the fiberglass insulation.

    Rough-In Plumbing Overview

To begin installation of rough-in plumbing, the plumbing crew begins by drilling a hole in the kitchen subfloor for installation of a kitchen-sink drain (figure F). Two smaller holes are also drilled to accommodate the hot- and cold-water pipes.

A temporary plastic cap is installed over the end of the length of PVC drainpipe, and the pipe is installed in the hole (figure G). Lengths of pipe are also inserted in the two smaller holes.

In the half-bath, the plumber determines the best location for the box that will house the hot- and cold-water shutoffs for the washing machine. The box is installed between two of the 2x4 studs in the wall (figure H).

PVC pipe is laid out and cut to length in order to provide the necessary connections for the tub/shower combination. A PVC vent is installed alongside one of the studs outside the shower stall (figure I).

Connections for the tub are installed by carefully measuring the spaces and cutting lengths of pipe for fit (figure J) The connecting surfaces of pipe are swabbed with a cleaner and attached using a specialized quick-drying adhesive.

Tip : Because unexpected problems may arise, and plans for installation of various fixtures may change during the construction process, it's a good idea to be available to consult with the plumbing crew as they proceed with their installation.
