    Tips:

    • Water temperature above 120 degrees can cause tap water scalds. Test your water temperature with a thermometer at the tap and, if necessary, lower the setting on your hot water heater to "low" or 120 degrees.

    • Thorny shrub roses or barberries planted under first floor windows can discourage burglars. Spiny-leafed shrubs like hollies and mahonias can also do the trick.

    • If you're grumpy, tired or angry, pick another time to work with power tools when your concentration is at its best.

    • You can always be sure that your project is square if you get equal measurements from both diagonals.

    • Since endgrain is more porous, it absorbs more stain and ends up darker than the rest of your wood. A coat of varnish mixed with three parts mineral spirits will partially seal the end grain of your project so that the stain will match the smooth edges of the board.

    • If you have a self-cleaning oven, your barbecue scrubbing days are over. Just toss the barbecue grates in the oven, and let it do the work.
