  • Cooking Up the Kitchen: Finishing Touches
  • From "Home IQ"
    episode DHIQ-114

In this final segment of our "Cooking Up the Kitchen" episode, viewers see the added touches that give the kitchen a custom look. Brad Oberg, homeonwer, installs the ceramic tile backsplash and grace notes such as molding, grapes and leaf design handles are added to give the kitchen that Old World Tuscan look.

    • Brad, a true do-it-yourselfer since childhood, painstakingly installed the decorative ceramic tiled backsplash (figure A) himself.

    • To add a Tuscan touch, wide molding is attached to the top of the cabinets (figure B).

    • A grape cluster design (figure C) is added to the cabinets as well for more of that Tuscan flavor.

    • Another grace note in the Oberg kitchen is the leaf design on the cabinet doorknobs (figure D).

    • The piece-de-resistance has to be the vine-and-leaf design (figure E) drawn on the archway leading into the kitchen by artist Eileen Barron and Lynn. The artist says the key to this particular clever Trompe L'oeil artwork is that she placed a few faux nails with pieces of rope throughout the design to make it appear like someone has actually tacked the vine to stay on the wall.

    • The island pot rack and lights (figure F) are installed and the final touch is the installation of the floor tiles.
