| Cooking Up the Kitchen: The Cabinets |

With the design of the kitchen decided, in this segment the designer goes to the site to mark where the cabinets will go, along with the plumbing, electricity and heating. Then the cabinets are installed.- Allen Kline, the kitchen designer for the Oberg home, visits the site to mark where everything will go in the kitchen (figure A). The floors and walls also will be marked for the mechanics -- the plumbing, heating and electricity. The plumber, electrician and heating personnel need to know the size and type of appliance in order to do their tasks properly.
- Kline also has to be sure that the cabinets and appliances will fit properly.
- The next step is for the homeowners to check the site and sign "off" on the plans.
- After the drywall is put up the cabinets are the first kitchen items to arrive at the site.
- Installer Todd Kline begins the process of converting the empty space into the kitchen of Lynn's dreams. The big pieces are set in place (figure B) first, and then each cabinet is attached to the wall and then to each other, carefully leveling each cabinet as he goes.
- When he gets to the cabinet in the corner, the one that will hold the ovens, there's a question about the warming drawer. Miscommunication between the homeowners and the installed resulted in the drawer being targeted for the kitchen island instead of the corner where it belonged. Kline did the prep work by cutting out the space for the warming drawer before Brad Oberg noticed the mistake the next day.
Result: Kline had to get some fillers and make little pieces to cover the opening he created. In the end the warming drawer winds up where it belongs, the island looks like new and there's only a "little" damage to the homeowners' checkbook. - Another problem cropped up when the countertop was installed on the island. There wasn't enough space between the refrigerator and the countertop to comfortably open the refrigerator.
Result: The homeowners gave up the original "bigger" refrigerator and decided to go with a smaller side-by-side model (figure C) in order to have more space. The rest of the solution, unfortunately, cost the couple some money -- the sizes of the cabinets were changed to a smaller size. Luckily these changes were made before the tile flooring had gone in. If the flooring were already installed, the cost to cut and re-size could have been substantial.
In the next segment the homeowners choose their countertops and you'll get to see how they are cut at the warehouse.
