An efficient ventilation hood can also be a dramatic focal point in a kitchen.

    Materials:

ventilation hood for installation over a peninsula or island
    plumb bob
    drill/driver
    scrap plywood
    screws
    lag bolts

    Steps:

    1. Determine the center of the cooktop, then use a plumb bob to find the corresponding spot in the ceiling.

    2. Make a nailer by cutting a piece of plywood a little larger than the mounting bracket for the hood. Determine the center of the piece of plywood, and drill a hole through it. Attach the plywood to the ceiling with screws, lining up the center hole with the center mark.

    3. Mark the locations of the lag bolts on the nailer. Screw the lag bolts about 3/4 of the way into the nailer. Slide the bracket onto the lag bolts, and tighten them up.
