Project 1: Installing Metal Crown MoldingFor the first kitchen project, Chris and Jim prepare and install on the tin crown molding that will complete the tin ceiling Jim and his son had previously installed. Safety Alert: Tin ceilings and trim are very sharp so be sure to wear protective gloves while handling it.
The area around the top of the wall is broken up with window and door trim. Chris and Jim will install backer board to give them an even surface for the crown (figure A) . The tin crown was purchased in advance, but it has to be prepared and painted before it can be installed.
- Begin by measuring the perimeter and determining the amount of material required (figure B). Determine which runs will be continuous and which corners will be mitered, wall stud layout, and ceiling tile support and lath supports.
Provide a level line around the perimeter of the room using either a laser level or an eight foot level.Cut backer board to the proper measurements as required (figure C).
Continue to measure and install new backer board around the room perimeter (figures D and E).
Begin preparing the metal crown by washing with the acid wash and drying it thoroughly. Jim sprays the acid wash that has been mixed with water (figure F). Then he and Chris use steel wool to wipe it off (figure G).
Apply red oxide spray primer to the bare metal (figure H). Allow the primer to fully dry and then apply the finish coat of white paint (figure I) to match the ceiling.
