The stock cabinets are fastened together. Then, a recessed toe kick is added and oak wrap is put on for a finished look. To customize the island, rope molding and feet are added.

Before, this '80s kitchen had an island...sort of.

Now, the kitchen has a brand new, customized island.

Time: 18 hours over two days. Difficulty Rating: This project rates a 3 out of 5 on the Weekend Handyman difficulty scale.Materials: Safety glasses Stock cabinets Variety of molding Cabinet feet Corbels Countertop Square Combination square Trim saw Reciprocating saw Finish nailer Chop saw Glue Nails Clamps Shims Cotton rag Glaze Adding Toe kick, Feet and Decorative Molding 1. Begin by drilling pilot holes and using 1-1/4" screws to start fastening the cabinets together (figure A). 2. Add in the other sides for the toe kick. First, spread on some wood glue to create a stronger and longer lasting bond (figure B). Then, nail in place. 3. Next, glue on nailing blocks, and nail into place (figure C). 4. Using wood glue, adhere oak wrap over the toe kick. 5. Using a chop saw, cut oak wrap to go over the toe kick (figure D). Spread wood glue on oak wrap, press firmly in place (figure E), make sure its flush and nail in place with 5/8" nails. 6. Choose feet for the kitchen island. 7. Set the foot over the filler block and mark it equal distance from the corner (figure F).
8. Then, glue the foot to the filler block (figure G), clamp into place (figure H), shoot a nail into place and take the clamp off and put another nail just off center (figure I).
9. Spread glue on filler block and nail it directly into the island (figure J).10. Add corner molding to hide corners where the beadboard meets the oak. Cut to size, put on a very thin bead of wood glue, and press into place (figure K). Secure with finishing nails.
11. Oak is a very hard wood and can split or crack. Always place the nail in at least one inch from the end. That way you wont split the molding.12. To add decorative molding, use a chop saw to cut rope molding down to size. Place a piece of oak on the chop saw behind the rope molding so it doesnt split (figure L). Make miter cuts at a 45-degree angle. Nail it along the bottom of the island (figure M).
