Host Paul Ryan begins by cutting stock cabinets down so that they are uniform with one another. Beadboard is added to the unfinished side of the cabinets for texture.

Before, this '80s kitchen had an island...sort of.

Now, the kitchen has a brand new, customized island.

Time: 18 hours over two days. Difficulty Rating: This project rates a 3 out of 5 on the Weekend Handyman difficulty scale.Materials: Safety glasses Stock cabinets Variety of molding Cabinet feet Corbels Countertop Square Combination square Trim saw Reciprocating saw Finish nailer Chop saw Glue Nails Clamps Shims Cotton rag Glaze Cutting Cabinets to Size and Adding Beadboard 1. Begin by choosing the look and type of material you would like to work with, including stock cabinets, molding, toe kick, glazes, feet and corbels (figure A). 2. Your stock cabinets may have to be trimmed down so that the height of the cabinets are uniform. Using a square to determine where to cut the height of the toe kick, line it up from the existing toe kick and make a straight line (figure B). 3. Before making any cuts, make sure to inspect the cabinet for any staples, nails or screws and remove them before cutting.
4. With a trim saw, cut along your reference line for the toe kick (figure C). Tap it a few times with a hammer and one side of the toe kick should pop right off (figure D). Cut the other side of the toe kick.
5. To create a recessed toe kick on both sides of the island, measure 3-1/2 inches along the side of the toe kick and use a reciprocating saw to make cuts (figure E).6. To add beadboard on unfinished surface of cabinets: Use 1/4" shims on the cabinets to fill in the extra space and to ensure the beadboard will line up on both sides. Then, use 5/8" nails with a finish nailer to fasten the shims to the cabinet (figure F).
7. Using clamps to hold the cabinets in position (figure G), make sure everything lines up just right.8. Rip the beadboard to size with a table saw (figure H). 9. Nail the beadboard to the base cabinet so that it will accurately line up with the front edge of the two wall cabinets flush with the front of the beadboard (figure I). When nailing beadboard, make sure to nail into the grooves. Then, you wont have to fill in the nail holes as theyll be hidden in the grooves.
