Kitchen life revolves around the sink, the most major workstation in the room. There are many options when it comes to kitchen-sink design.Sink Options and Tips - There are endless levels of sinks available, and you can spend as little as $100 or as high as $500 for a stainless steel sink. You can use a sink with a disposal located on a kitchen island (figure A), which is used mainly for food preparation such as vegetable chopping.
- You can also set up a dispenser that releases hot or near boiling water directly from the special tap.

- If you can afford it, putting in a three-compartment sink is great because of the garbage disposal in the middle.
- The most common sink material is stainless steel because it's durable and easy to clean.
- Porcelain coated cast iron sinks (figure B), which are extremely durable, are gaining popularity as well. These sinks are held in place by their own weight and sealed with caulk. They tend to have the ability to resist scratching and have good functionality.
- A lower-end option is the enamel covered steel sink (figure C). One of the drawbacks, however, is if you purchase a white one, your black and steel pots are going to scratch and stain the sink.
- When choosing a sink more than the basin has to be considered. You have several faucet options as far as finishes go. There's polished brass, nickel, brushed nickel and chrome.
- Be sure that your faucet is compatible with the design of your sink.
- An alternative to the typical faucet fixture is to go with a pedal controlled faucet (figure D), which makes functionality easier. This design is often used in hospitals to cut down on the spread of germs.
In the next episode of Blueprint for Home Building the bathroom is discussed.
