  • Repairing Scratches and Stains in Bathtubs

Most bathtubs today are made of fiberglass or acrylic. They're lightweight and affordable, but what do you do if yours gets stained or scratched? Here are a couple of quick fixes using common household products that can solve those problems — and maybe keep you from having to replace your bathtub.

For a stain, try using dishwasher detergent. Apply a generous amount to the stain with a damp sponge, and let the detergent sit on the stain for about an hour. However, you need to keep the detergent damp in order for the stain fighters to work, so you'll need to spray it lightly with water every 10 minutes or so. After the hour is up, scrub the detergent into the stain lightly with a nylon-bristle brush, then rinse it. The stain should be gone.

If you're dealing with a scratch, you're in luck. Acrylic and fiberglass are both "solid surface" materials, which means their color goes all the way through. To get rid of the scratch, use 1500-grit wet-or-dry sandpaper, available at auto supply stores. Wet the sandpaper and work it gently over the area of the scratch until the scratch is gone.
