| Cooking Up the Kitchen: Coming Up with a Design |
From "Home IQ" episode DHIQ-114 |
|
|
In this first segment of Home IQ's "Cooking Up the Kitchen" episode, Brad and Lynn Oberg, the homeowners, draw upon their love of Tuscany to create a design for the kitchen, considering everything from tile, lighting, sinks and faucets. When our homeowners traveled to Italy for a vacation they fell in love with Tuscany and now they want an Old World inspired kitchen. Planning a new kitchen, however, takes lots of planning and the couple must consider every option.

In DIY's new Home IQ series, you'll follow the Oberg family during the decision-making process of building this beautiful new home.

In this week's episode of Home IQ, Lynn Oberg's favorite room in the house is designed and created ... her kitchen!
|
- Any kitchen starts with a set of plans (figure A). "Whenever we entertain no matter what house we've been in everyone ends up in the kitchen," Lynn says. So what the couple tried to do with the floorplan of the house was to make it as open and accessible for entertainment space adjacent to the kitchen. And the concept is Tuscan.
- As we've mentioned in earlier episodes of Home IQ, Lynn created "idea boards" with clippings for each room, including the kitchen (figure B). Our homeowners met with their kitchen designer, Allen Kline, more than a dozen times before the final selections (cabinets, sink, faucet, etc.) were made.
Note: Brad and Lynn tried to stay on budget, but when everything was tallied in the end they went 100 percent over budget -- but this is the norm. If there's one room where a homeowner will spend "over" budget, it's in the kitchen! - Over a period of a few months the homeowners visit various showrooms to shop for their Tuscan kitchen. The sink was surprisingly easy, but choosing the just-right faucet proved to be a tough task. Once again they found themselves searching the Internet for possible choices, which ended up being a smart decision since the couple found the sink (figure C) they wanted even before the product was available by the distributor.
- It's important to know that when building a new home, it's extremely vital that you make these decisions in a timely fashion in order "not" to hold up the building schedule!
In the next segment it's time to start building the kitchen, and the cabinets arrive -- along with a few problems.
