  • Keeping the Inside Out: What Is Noise Reduction?
  • From "Blueprint for Home Building"
    episode DBHB-110

To end our episode on insulating your new home, host Jeff Wilson will discuss one of the additional benefits of insulating your home -- noise reduction.

In terms of insulation, noise reduction refers to suppressing unwanted sounds in various areas of the home. It's an added bonus that a well-insulated house will have, and this is a fact that most homeowners don't consider during construction.

Ordinarily thermal insulation materials -- fiberglass, cellulose, foam or rigid boards -- are all that's needed to create a quieter environment. And what makes noise reduction such an important part of your insulating system?

    • Not only can it provide a quieter home for sleeping and working, but it can also give family members added privacy. For example, if you have teenagers or if you have an area where you'd like a quiet space -- such as a home office or home theater -- proper insulation would be the way to go.

In today's episode of Blueprint for Home Building, you've learned quite a bit about insulation, including the different materials that can be used, who installs them and how a well-insulated home can reduce noise throughout the house.

In the next episode is all about the doors in and around your home. You'll find out everything from the basics and different door styles to a special focus on garage doors in the final segment.
