Additional Steps and TipsFollowing are some additional steps (not detailed in the episode) in this restoration project as well as a couple of web-extra restoration tips.
Custom Fir Crown- Using the 2x4 stock, rip 1-1/4" x 1-1/2" (stock thickness).
- Using the 1" cove bit, make the first profile in the wood.
- Next, using the rabbeting bit, determine the height of the first profile in the crown. Repeat by lowering the bit to the next profiles height.
- Sand with 220 sandpaper for finish.
Room-Partition Casing- After plinth bases have been installed, determine the height of the existing opening.
- Cut trim pieces as required on the inside of the opening first and install. Cut trim pieces flush with the height of the opening less the height of the plinth bases.
- Install the header trim pieces.
Room-Partition Column Installation- Determine the height between the plinth base and the top of the cased opening. Cut the column to the height, and place on top of the plinth base. Secure to plinth base using the pocket hole jig set.
- Trim base and capitol of column with the custom trim.

Web-Extra Tip: More on Picture MoldingHanging pictures usually means driving a lot of nails into your walls, but there's a better way to do it. Picture molding provides both visual interest as well as a way to hang pictures without making numerous holes in the walls. This is important when you want to hang art on historic plaster. The elegant Victorian look can be accomplished by hanging frames with a decorative ribbon that attaches to the back of the piece. The ribbon is then nailed into the picture molding and can be finished off with a vintage medallion or button.

Web-Extra Tip: More on Fir Plywood When restoring the look of wood throughout your home, there is one way to cut cost without compromising the beauty. Using plywood instead of solid wood is a great alternative for any do it yourselfer. Plywood is an engineered panel made by laminating layers of wood veneer and waterproof (phenolic) resin adhesive under heat and pressure. It provides a smooth, uniform surface which is resistant to abrasion, moisture penetration and deterioration from many common chemicals and solvents. Plywood comes in many different sizes and wood types which make it easy to find materials to fit your project needs.
