Using a jig saw, cut out the section that will fit around the stair. Using a sliding compound-miter saw, miter-cut the decorative trim pieces to the necessary lengths. The rough spots and sharp edges of the trim pieces can be sanded, once installed, to provide a smooth finish.Create a top cap for the base using 1/2" fir plywood cut to the width of the base, plus the intended overhang of the crown to be installed around the perimeter (figure I). (Later, the column will rest on this top cap.) Create a cut-out on one end of the cap piece, as needed, to accommodate the width of the wall.
Fit the plinth base to the wall (figure J), check it for level and secure it with a finish-nail gun (figure K).
Using the nail gun, fasten the top cap--which has been cut to fit around the end of the wall--to the base (figure L).Using the nail gun, attach decorative trim pieces underneath the cap and inside the panels. The finishing touch on this piece is a bottom frame that fits around all three exposed sides of the base (figure M).
Cut additional trim pieces to close space from wall to plinth base. Fill all nail holes and sand for finish to complete the first plinth base (figure N). Repeat the steps to create additional bases.
