| Paint, Trim and Fireplaces: More Trim and the Columns |

One of the special details of the Oberg house is the columns (figure A -- this is a close-up of the ornate detailing of the base for the one load-bearing column in the house). There are seven columns altogether, and the trim carpenters are the ones who will install them.

- Each column comes equipped with a base and a capital (goes at the top of the column). The placement is the first consideration. The base and column are placed on the floor and then the carpenter measures from the ceiling down to determine how high to cut the post.
- Once the "exact" height of the column is determined, it's cut (figure B). And once it's cut there is no going back.
- After the column is cut the base and capital are screwed on and the columns are put in their approximate places around the house, but before they are secured into place Brad Oberg (homeowner) stops by to check on their locations.
- The column in the dining room is the only one that is structural, which means it's load bearing -- and it's the most detailed (see figure A). This column anchors the corner of the dining room.
- The trim carpenters also installed the stair railing (figure C), and the multiple angles and the landing make it a real challenge. The balusters are put in first, carefully aligning and leveling them with the stair tread (figure D).
- Once the balusters are set the railings get fitted, and on this particular stairway each piece of railing is a different length and angle, and it takes a lot of patience and precision to figure it out.
- The next step is putting in the spindles, and each is measured, given a number and then cut to length.
- When the stairs are finished the trim carpenters begin on the trim around the front doorway (figure E). The design is a concerted effort between Brad and the head carpenter.
In the final segment viewers are privy to Lynn's reaction to the wall colors.
