  • Paint, Trim and Fireplaces: The Painting Process
  • From "Home IQ"
    episode DHIQ-117

This week the Oberg home begins to get its character with painted walls, trim and the installation of the fireplaces. As the construction progresses, Brad and Lynn Oberg (the homeowners) take regular tours of the site making decisions well in advance for the trim work, paint selections and the fireplace placements.

In DIY's new Home IQ series, you'll follow the Oberg family during the decision-making process of building this beautiful new home.

In this week's episode of Home IQ, Brad and Lynn Oberg (the homeowners) and their daughters select the paint colors for their walls and the workers come in to paint.

The painting and trim stages can take months depending upon how many colors and how much detail is involved:

    • The painters start with a first coat of paint (figure A) on the inside walls. The prep work always takes longer than the actual painting. If it doesn't get paint, it gets covered (figure B).

    • After all of the surfaces that won't be painted are covered, a high-pressure sprayer is used to apply a base coat of white to "all" the walls.

Note: The high-pressure sprayer is used because it can pump out up to 1-1/2 gallons of paint per minute.

    • As the paint is sprayed on the walls, another painter follows with a roller -- a process called "back rolling." This process evens out the paint and gives it a nice texture.

    • Painting is done in stages for many reasons -- some because of the builder's schedules and some because the color hasn't been selected or simply to allow for drying time.

    • The ceilings are done first, and then the trim is tackled, which involves prepping the trim first and then giving it at least two coats of paint.

Note: The site supervisor marks each room with the correct color information for the painters.

While the base coat is being applied, the homeowners make their final paint-color selections. "I think this is the hardest part of the whole house," Lynn says. For starters Lynn chose to go with same tones (figure C -- pointing to chose with left hand) through the great room, the entrance hall and the dining room.

Site supervisor, Greg Allen, says picking the colors for the walls and trim is just as important as picking tiles and bath fixtures. "I have to know what you [the homeowners] want ? and in our spec [specifications] sheet it's clearly listed and clearly stated that we're going to use two colors," he says, but he ended up with 12!

In the next segment the trim carpenters begin the process of prepping and painting the trim work and the homeowners find a hearth that matches the front porch.
