Metal Rail Transformation
1. The railing is from 1/2 inch copper tubing and a redwood frame. The new railing will take care of local code issues and the redwood softens up the harsh look of the wires (figure A).
2. Set the fence of the table saw and rip the stock to width1 and 3/8" (figure B). These pieces are the skirts, or returns, for the cap rail.
3. Next, cut 2x2 stock that will make the redwood panels (figure C).
4. Use a tubing cutter to cut the tubing for the rail panels (figure D).
5. To attach the copper pipes to the panel, use a spade bit at the drill press and drill holes in the 2x2 frame panel stock (figure E).
6. Before assembly of the panels, rough up the surface of the copper pipe with steel wool (figure F).
